IN MAY, my cousin Lily and I traveled around Lisbon for a week in pursuit of palaces and the famous Portuguese tarts.

After tasting ten subpar tarts over the first four days, we finally came across Pasteis de Belem on the fifth day. Pasteis de Belem is the Peter Luger of Portuguese tarts, if you will. We ordered one each, inhaled those in about three bites and realized how foolish we were for not ordering more. So we asked for seconds and were happy.

Portuguese tarts are ridiculously delicious plain but you can serve them sprinkled with powdered sugar and cinnamon.
